For most Americans, the most famous “underground railroad” was in place during the days of the slave trade. The closest analogues for the “mutant underground” are found in real history. In an interview with We Got This Covered, Mangold revealed that he “played with there being an underground railroad where there were a couple of other mutants that met on the journey.” Ultimately, Mangold felt that this would be a distraction from the intensely personal plot he wanted to write.
